  1. Cycling Season is Upon Us

    Cycling season has officially started

      Not that it ever really stopped in the first place...   With December most likely being a write off for most of us and January being a gym-junkie flop, now is the time to get our butts into gear.  If you're thinking about getting geared up for a summer cycle tour you should probably continue to read on! Leave the past behind! You should probably start with getting rid of some of your spare tyres (not literally, you'll need those ones) - it's not hibernating season anymore. It's time to start putting more miles behind you;  it takes at least 12 weeks of training for a long distance tour.   Therefore, you should ideally be cycling 3-4 days a week on the run up to leaving.  A good schedule is to ride Tuesday or Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, rest Monday and on the less strenuous days, include some cross training or swimming. You'll need plenty brain fuel to mentally prepare you for the distance ahead.  On tours you'll be eating and drinking what would normally be considered a sickly amount but trust us, you'll need it!  When you can, try and eat as you would when touring.  Here's what's to expect:  begin with hearty breakfast - carb rich and approx. 2 hours before your ride,   200-300 calories an hour during the ride, at least 1 bottle of water an hour (hydration is lost at an increasingly fast rate) - try and mix between electrolytes too.  And lastly make room for bananas and order a peanut butter sandwich for lunch.
